When I was younger, I loved the book All Creatures, Great and Small by James Herriot, which featured the adventures of a veterinarian. I knew then that not only would I became a veterinarian, but I would write a similar book about my experiences.

Life had other ideas for me, however, and I became a doctor of children instead of animals. This has led to so many laughs and memorable events, that I decided to write the pediatric version of that great book.

Whether I am being taught the latest trends by teens or being shocked by the words of a five-year-old, my life is always entertaining. Even on the days when my patients are crying more than laughing, I know I have the best job in the world. This book is my way of sharing that with others.

Brian Benfield was born and raised in Lenoir, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received both his undergraduate and medical degrees. After completing his pediatric training in 1999, Dr. Benfield joined the Shelby Children’s Clinic. He is married, with one son and two daughters, and has lived on a farm in his home state since 2005.

When not entertaining children, he loves to hike, kayak, and mountain bike. He lacks the patience for fishing, but loves to explore the many streams of his home state.

The Artist

The artwork for this book was done by a talented young artist named Cooper Bridges. When Cooper was eleven, she drew a picture of me and gave it to me at a clinic visit. I knew then that I wanted her to create all the art in this book. Her drawings are also featured on the cover. She is now in high school and obviously has a bright future ahead of her.
